Newbie

Hello. I'm new. I have caught Pyrexia. It is out of control.

It all started with this piece right here:

When I purchased this set at a Community Hospice Thrift Store, I had no idea what it would turn me into, simply put, a pyrex freak. I purchased this for $10.00, I initially thought it was a little high for something old and that came in a weathered box (yes it came with the original box), but I wanted something cool to have at parties for snacks, it was also in very good condition, no scratches, no fading, the stand thingy (newbie terms) is not tarnished and is quite shiny, so I purchased it. After my purchase, my mother came over and I showed her my find, she stated "that looks really old, but it's in amazing condition, that might be worth something, you know people collect this stuff"... After that, I started to Google "Vintage Pyrex" and I stumbled upon Pyrex Love and the Pyrex Collective. I was amazed with all of the cool colors and patterns, and I was impressed at how practical Pyrex is in the kitchen. I am only 30, so the Pyrex I know of are the clear Pyrex baking dishes and bowls!

My husband is a little worried about my obsession. I have already gathered several pieces this past month, and he is praying this doesn't turn into a "hoarding" nightmare. :)

  1. I wouldn't worry Lauren...there is NOTHING wrong with being a Pyrex hoarder...lol. I know I am, and I love it. There is also a plus...if you become too much of a hoarder...you can get a good spot on TV and become somewhat famous...LOL! Just enjoy the JOY of Pyrex collecting!!!

  2. Pyrex collecting is such fun - even if we get a little bit crazy sometimes - lucky you to have the chip and dip set, especially for your first piece - hope you share more of your finds...

  3. Welcome!
Your husband should be worried. I'm pretty sure mine is planning an intervention behind my back. I started collecting ONE MONTH ago, went on a totaly Pyrex frency, I mean I was hitting up 3-4 thrift stores a day...

it's cooling down a bit, but... I have about 60 pieces!!

But I must say, your first piece is a beautiful one!! Love the blue balloon bowls!

  5. Hi Lauren,

I am right there with you! I don't understand why Pyrex ever went to the clear boring pieces. What an awesome first purchase. I can't wait to own this set one day.

I have only been collecting a few months but I have some of the same habits of Heather listed above. I can't pass a thrift store without going in and looking for pyrex.

  6. Ok. It's not fair. You're a newbie, you don't even know what you're doing and the first piece you find is one of the most sought after? Wow. What amazing luck. And $10 for the whole mint set with the box? Well done!!!

  7. I've been told not to use it... but I think I will. Would that make me a rebel??

I personally do not think the thrift stores around my town have caught on to the Pyrex inflation that is happening around other parts of the country (since I apparently got a good deal out of them)... but then again, I have gone in several times after my sweet initial find and there hasn't been much selection. I have only been able to get a few pieces at the Hospice thrift stores (people have to die before they give up their Pyrex pieces).

  8. I would use it occasionally, but remember to lovingly wash it by hand, lol! No dishwasher!
