happy holidays ladies and gents!

well, I've been away for a while
and it seems like many of us here on the second collective have been too
since becoming a mom I haven't been out searching too often for new pieces
to add to the collection
not to mention, it does get harder to find great scores
when your collection has gotten a tad out of hand
but I have been loving this season
and getting to use the special holiday pieces
perfect for family gatherings
this year I was only asked to bring a fruit side for Christmas Eve
[the perks of having a newish baby, and being domestically challenged]
but even though I only brought some pomegranates for everyone to snack on
I figured they still deserved a pretty casserole dish to be served in
so my Golden Pine Promotional Space Saver was the lucky winner
I feel like it really classed up my limited attempt at a "fruit side"

and for those of you curious about what my little one has been up to lately
I'm now blogging exclusively about my daughter on my new blog
Olive Everly - feel free to stop by and say hi!
hope everyone has a happy, safe, and pyrex filled new year!

~ Baking in Pyrex....

I have a odd attachment to this set of lime green bake ware from Pyrex. This lovely lime green square 8x8 Pyrex pan, is my favorite one for brownies.

The thing about the vintage Pyrex for me... is that I know how it will perform in the oven. No guess work. Preheat the oven to 350. Cook for 23 minutes. And I get a perfect set of brownies each time.

And of course, I always bake them from scratch. That is if a package of Betty Crocker brownie mix and my favorite can of Baker's Joy counts as, from scratch. :)

A New Home

I haven't posted on here in a while. We spent early summer putting our house on the market. We sold it and moved to a new house!

That was not an experience I would ever choose to repeat, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE living in our new house in the country.

So here is a bit of show and tell for the new home of my pyrex collection.

My new dining room:

I purchased the hutch from the owners of the house. They had already painted it. I love it. I knew I had to have it because my Pyrex would look amazeballs in it. And it does.  The hutch looks awesome with the kitchen too, which is actually behind me in the picture above.

I also found the table at an antique mall for a pretty good price, and the chairs were all thrifted. I love how it all comes together.

Here is a closeup of the hutch.
And to highlight one of my more recent finds, the balloons look pretty good on the table.

I am still working on unpacking and decorating the rest of the house. It is so fun to have a whole house to decorate again! And we are so in love with this house and the property that we are just ecstatic. I have no need to leave, except to go shopping for decorations! (Oh and work I guess - to pay for those decorations!)

Happy fall pyrex hunting!

Garage Sale Find, and Pyrex Love!

Hi folks! After today, I decided I needed to write my second post ever for the Pyrex Collective II. My recent finds deserve to be shared!

Whenever I get out of the car to go to a thrift store, antique store, or garage sale, I have a little mantra that I say under my breath, "Big Bucks, Pyrex Love". Silly, but hey, whatever works, right?

Anyway, I spent a few hours out garage sale-ing this morning for the 141 Garage Sales (a 100-mile long series of garage sales in Iowa!). I saw a couple of pieces of pyrex that were seriously unloved, but I had to leave them behind (chipped, filthy, unpriced). We were nearly 2 hours in, and I had found exactly ONE thing to purchase (a Police record, lol).

Finally, at one place along the road, I stopped and found something that made me want to skip with glee. I found a dismantled Cosco bar cart in great condition... with no price. :( The ladies at the sale were busy, so we looked around, and I found a mixer and forced my son to carry it up to the register (he complained the whole time, of course). I asked about the cart on a whim, thinking it was probably going to be out of my price range.

THREE BUCKS!

The lady said it had never been put together, as long as she had had it, and by the way, here are the bolts for it. I skipped the whole way to the car, cart pieces in hand and under arm, popped it in the trunk, and proceeded to mostly strike out at the other garage sales, before deciding to just go to a couple of antique stores in Des Moines to spend the rest of my garage sale money (on Pyrex, of course!).

The whole time we were carrying the cart pieces out to the car, my son kept grilling me, "What are you going to do with that cart? Where is it going to go?"

Well, THIS is what I had in mind:

A place to show off my Pyrex collection! Well, a good portion of it, anyway, LOL!

The yellow large fridgie, and the small square ramekins were purchased today at a flea market store, and an antique store. The fridgie was $7 (flea market!), while the ramekins were 15% off, and ended up being $2.13 each! The fridgie is PERFECT. I accidentally completed my butterprint fridgie set when I found the rectangular one at a rummage sale earlier this spring for $1. Yellow dots was an antique store find for $10, if I remember correctly.

The two yellow mixing bowls are in perfect condition, and were $15 for the pair in a little shop in Door County, Wisconsin, where I spent my vacation (and worked a ren-faire!). Mod Kitchen was from the same antique store where I found Yellow dots and the ramekins. The larger charcoal snowflakes space saver was a Fish Creek, WI, find for $6! The smaller space saver was a Goodwill find this week ($4!), while the casserole was found in June. Someone had hidden it amongst plastic ware. My Pyrex-spidey-senses made me look a little closer at that bottom shelf. :) Up until that point, I had never seen this pattern in person, even in an antique store, and now I've found 3 pieces in a month. Lucky me!

The turquoise snowflakes are some of my favorites! The white one on the bottom (not divided) was one of the very first pieces I bought after starting to collect. The others have all made their way into my shopping cart at Goodwill over the last couple of years. For some reason, our Goodwill has been pretty good to me lately! I found a red hostess bowl with lid last week, too, for $7.

Other recent finds (mostly today!):

The Friendship bowl, and pink daisy were found today, and were 15% off. Friendship is my MUST HAVE pattern, so I spent a little more than I should have - $16 something, after discount. Pink Daisy was $11 something after the discount. No lid, but lids nearly always turn up! The flamingo square baker was found at the same Goodwill where I found the red hostess dish. The red fridgie with lid was found today at the flea market store, and was $4.

All in all, I had an AWESOME day!

After a Pyrex Famine....

Well, I haven't been buying much Pyrex lately. Not sure why. Haven't seen anything I wanted. Or worth the space in my inventory. Or in good condition. Or not horribly overpriced. Or all of the above.

Then the other day I saw these:

What was noteworthy is that I was at Value Village which is notorious for overpricing...especially the Pyrex. But for some reason these were not.

And all 4 pieces were there.
After a quick text to Hubby for input, I got them all for less than $10. (had a coupon)

Hubs is the Shipping Department and he's been trying to steer me away from large and breakable. But he gave the go ahead...so I went ahead.

If I wasn't already committed to the turquoise....we'd be tempted to keep them...Hubby likes this pattern too.
At home I found one little chip on the 404. But a smooth one, not sharp. Not a dealbreaker, I don't think.

Ain't they purdy?

Real or Fake?

Fellow Pyrex lovers my bestie came across this dish online and we were wondering if anyone has seen this IRL or knows anything about it. I apologize for
the photo but this what she sent me. To us it almost looks like a vintage decal on a clear lid but anything is possible

Crossed Off #1 on My List

I spotted her from across the way at the Farm Chicks show in Spokane last weekend....

Oh, and look what was inside...

Yep, both pieces to the Eyes Chip & Dip bowl set.  Minus the bracket but I already have one.

Crossed #1 off of my list.  Be still my heart.  And the $30.00 price tag for this set?  Unheard of at an antique show.

Is it possible to experience a positive case of sticker shock?

Check out my other Farm Chicks finds at Pyrex Thrifter Sisters!

Until next time...

Pyrex Sighting- for fun

So, my husband and I own a Rita's and for fun our family and friends shot this video. I was not part of the video, but it is shot at my house. Can you spy the pyrex that makes it into one scene. Enjoy the short video, it makes me laugh each time I see it. Happy pyrex- hunting tomorrow!

Another Completed Set!

Hi everyone, Erica from Pyrex Thrifter Sisters here!

I haven't been having too much luck with Pyrex at the thrifts around here.  It's not due to a lack of Pyrex (thank goodness).  It's just that I have to be more selective in my purchases due to a space restriction.  I mostly stick with pink, turquoise/aqua, Friendship, and Primary and we all know how difficult it can be to come across some of those patterns/colors in the wild.

Well luck was on my side the other day when I came across this little cutie at St. Vincent de Paul

This is the 401 bowl from the Americana Blue set, which I thought I already had but I bought it as a back up just in case. Plus, I was desperate for Pyrex so I couldn't leave it behind.

Well, I was wrong about already having that bowl.  What I really had was the 402 bowl from the set.  This is the one and only piece of Pyrex that I have ever found at our local Value Village.  I picked it up about 2 years ago when I very first started collecting.

Shortly after that Value Village score, I found the 403 to the set at a local antique mall.

A quick scan of my new Pyrex Passion book showed me that although these are numbered with 4's, there are actually only 3 bowls in the set.

Know what that means, Pyrex friends?

Eeeeek!  I have the whole set!  I don't know about you, but these three bowls are the only bowls I have ever seen in the Americana Blue set.  I see the bowls from the brown set from time to time, but never the prettier blue.  I would like to believe that this is a pretty rare set and one of the harder ones to put together.

Yay for me & just in time for the patriotic holiday season!

Have a lovely week,

Erica

Calling Pyrex Collectors

Hello there,

A woman by the name of Catherine May emailed me with a request. She works for a Toronto television company that is producing a new series called Collectors which features various collectors throughout Canada and the U.S. She would love to find a rabid vintage Pyrex collector to feature on the show.

If you are interested, please email Catherine at catherine@acrhitect-films.com

Buffet Twins

I found a set of Buffet Twins at the antique mall. I paid ten for the set, no lids or cradle. I think they are charming. :)

I just finished my master's program and feel so much space opening in my mind without that looming  around. :) I work full-time and have two toddlers, so it isn't like I am twiddling my thumbs, but I can dream about more pyrex!:)

Happy Spring, or graduation or Cinco De Mayo or whatever you want to celebrate!

new home, new pyrex displays

hello everyone!
 haven't posted lately
turns out having a baby, going back to work five months later,
moving into a new home, and finishing my masters [in june!]
can make for fewer pyrex posts - mostly because I'm still not on a regular hunting schedule
but, I do have something to share
a new home means displaying the pyrex collection in new ways
this corner window ledge is one of my favorite places in my new home
and as you maybe can tell, our new home was actually built right around 1950
so vintage pyrex was meant for this ledge!
I love having a dining room for my hutch
it seems quite small now that it is in a room, and not a hallway
I also love that I can see the majority of my collection from the main living space
something that was not true in our other home
even so, I still have a few pieces I cannot display
we lost three very large open shelves that our old kitchen had
and I'm really hating that our china and a few other pieces are hidden
I'll have to work on something for that soon
but for now, I can officially say I have moved my ninety+ piece collection
with no breaks, chips, or cracks
[I did spend a good penny on packing supplies however]

Blue Obsessions

I have been so busy lately with work and school and home life have unfairly kept me from any good pyrex thrifting lately. BUT this past weekend I found some fun things that I wanted to share.

A few weeks ago my dear friend found the small horizon blue oval casserole at a thrift shop. I was going to purchase it from her, but she fell in love with it (which I completely understood)! This weekend I found my own at a massive antique mall! It goes nicely with my larger one, and I do plan on making kitchen curtains out of my spoonflower pattern. Horizon Blue is one of my first loves in Pyrex - that and Primary stuff - and anything Blue! :)

Everything else I will show is from goodwill.

I found an interesting Corning Bowl. From what I found on pyrexlove this is a Corning Hornblower bowl. It is stamped Corning and 1951. It has a lovely shape. Oh and I found an opal rectangular cake pan, but can't tell if it is just DWD so that whatever was on it is gone or not. I don't really see anything on any sites about it. AND I found a lovely Blue Garland round casserole and this might be the beginning of a new obsession - or just a continuation of my blue pyrex obsession.

And then I have two items I have found recently at Goodwill. A Royal Wheat Divided dish, which is so cheerful. I need to find a good use for it. And I found the Brittany Blue Tart Dish at Goodwill too. I am not a huge fan of the look - it reminds me of my mother's (and probably lots of people's mothers) early 90's country blue obsession. Or maybe that it is trying too hard to be pretty or french with the Brittany name. Nonetheless - I can totally see using the size of the pan for breakfast quiches, etc, so I can get past the look. And lastly, I found the large homestead casserole. I think the size is so great for large meals, and although homestead is not my favorite, I don't dislike it like. I wish I had the big lid. Perhaps another day at goodwill. :)

Phew! Sorry to write so much at once! I just wanted to make sure these lovelies were given their due.

Good luck in the coming Garage Sale season!

Mod Kitchen Dreams Come True

Amongst the patterns I've coveted since I began collecting pyrex the mod kitchen has on my wish list! It's got fun graphics and it's a great yellow, what's not to love? In all of my travels I have yet to come across it in a thrift or antique store but today my mom found it for me!!! She had no clue what the pattern was only that it was pyrex and that she knew I would want it. She picked it up for a whopping $4!!!! Can you believe that? The best part is it's minty and perfect and looks like it's never been used. God bless the little old ladies who only ever displayed their pyrex and didn't use it!!

Sometimes You Just Gotta Bid

Hi Everyone!  Thrifter Sister Erica here.

I normally steer clear of buying Pyrex off of eBay.  No, it's not the shipping prices that scare me.  I just love when I find a piece in person.  It's a little more rewarding.  But even I know that there are certain pieces that I will never come across in person, pieces that I covet, pieces that I NEED!  And every once in a while, one of those pieces pops up online and I decide that it will be mine.

What is that dish in that beautiful shade of pink?

With those perfect white "Stems"?

And the perfect original lid and cradle?  Pink Stems 043!!

Give me a bad time and call me a cheater if you want.  I can take it.  This beauty is mine and nothing is going to rain on my parade!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Erica

Thrifting in Saskatchewan

I've been doing quite a bit of thrifting in April!  I've blogged about it here and here!
Pyrex isn't super hard to find out here in Saskatchewan, there almost always is at least one piece in Value Village.  In the Mennonite Clothes Closets it's rarer, and same with the Salvation Army's.  I've seen a few abused pieces that made me very very sad.  There are usually lots of Termo-Rey and the other glass companies as well.

Some eye candy for you!

Also does anyone know of an online English Pyrex reference site?  The one I have linked to on my blog doesn't work anymore. :(

Promo find

Well pyrex friends, in my neck of the woods finding pyrex at a thrift store is like finding hens teeth. I have a few theories as to why but that's for another time. So today my mom and I went out to a local antique mall and amongst the over priced pieces I managed to find the 1960
Meadow promo casserole for $12! It was the fist time I'd come across this piece in person and with all it's turquoise glory I knew I had to have it! We also went to a local value village and I found a white 401 that they wanted $5.99 for but it had a couple chips on the bottom so I asked of they could do anything about the price and they gave it to me for 99 cents!!!! The chips are on the bottom and hardly noticeable!! It's my first piece of white pyrex and I am so happy to have it!!

441 Frenzy

Happy Saturday!

I hope that many of you are taking advantage of the weekend to seek out new Pyrex for your collections.  I have picked up a few new pieces here and there and realized the other day that one of my collections has really blossomed.  I kept running into 441 Cinderella bowls while thrifting and since they are small I figured they would be a good thing for me collect and not overwhelm my cupboards.  I have now started using them as my cereal bowls and I eat oatmeal out of one of them every morning.  It is a fun way to brighten up my day and I wanted to show you how pretty this collection is getting.  I still have MANY more before I have every 441, but I'm up to 12 different patterns which is very exciting.  Here they are.  Don't be alarmed, no Pyrex was injured while taking these pictures.

I actually have 2 more of the Forest Fancies, but my dog uses them for her food (I just can't leave 441's behind, I told you!)  Hope this made you smile on your Saturday.  You can always check out Pyrex and more of mine and my Sister's shenanigans over at Pyrex Thrifter Sisters.

Until Next Time,
Hanna

~ Pyrex Butterprint...

I recently came across a new thrift store. Quite by chance. I had a little time to kill waiting to fetch my Daddy from a doctor's appointment.  I actually was headed to Sonic to get a cherry limeade.... when I spotted the store.

And I was not disappointed in what I saw. Which is rare for me.

Out of the 8 thrift stores that I tend to visit. Only 2 of them are really worth the time. And both of them are no where near my home. So this was a great surprise for me. This store is near my parents home. So I am near it at least once a week. Woo-hoo!

New to my Pyrex collection, is the Butterprint refrigerator storage dish. And it needs a good scrubbing.
Yet, the turquoise print is still shiny under that baked stain. And the cost was fair. Since it had its lid... I am all about having the lids. Even if I know I got to scrub them clean. I rather have a dirty lid than no lid at all! :)

I am so excited to finally have this dish to add to my collection. And I also bought that Corningware roaster too. Which I have more to say about it all here.... ~Farm Girl Pink!
