New Holiday Display

Just thought I'd pop in really quick to show you my new "holiday display" of Pyrex! Before this, some of you may remember, I had all pinks & turquoise on my grandmother's hutch. I decided a few days ago that it would be a shame if I didn't break out the festive holiday Pyrex and display it for a while. 

My favorite, as always, is the green "Merry Christmas" bowl in the center there. I love it! 

But also featured is some Friendship, which can look very Christmasy in the right setting, and some Snowflake. I also brought out some of the Thanksgiving colors, like my Americana set and some Autumn Harvest. Finally, the Starburst at top makes for the perfect tree-topper-like crown, doesn't it? Reminds me of the star of Bethlehem. It's very cheery! I'll have a hard time taking it down come 2013...

New Shelf Paper

I am really sorry about the picture quality. Still holding out on investing in a good camera. I changed the shelf paper on my Pyrex cabinet. I used plain ol' gift wrap instead of buying shelf liner. It lasted forever and was amazingly cheap.

I've had a few very good Pyrex days.
The other day I was out visiting my inlaws and
found all of these!
 

Autumn harvest is one of my favourite patterns. It was 1.99.
I don't love the woodland pattern, but, I do love that oval casserole. It was 4.99 and the verde lid which came without its dish was 1.99. I'll find you one day.
Then, at goodwill I found this! I was so excited when I saw it. It was hiding face down under a few pie plates and other uninteresting stuff. There was no matching dish though. oh well.

  Went thrifting this morning at some value villages that I don't normally visit. I found some real gems.This awesome Town and Country oval casserole, it was 5.99. Then this Colonial Mist 472. I never used to love this pattern, but it's really grown on me.

Then I found this beautiful Golden Acorn divided dish. with a lid!!!! I thought it was a steal for 5.99. It's finds like this that make it worth it for me. I love this!

And last but, definitely not least. I found this! I tried to find a name for the pattern, but, couldn't really nail one down. Any help? It's not in the best shape, it has a few scratches and some utensil markings but, I love it just the same. I was really hoping for some christmas pyrex, and this is good enough for me.

It was hiding with some sad looking pink mixing bowls. I wanted to take them home but, the small one was 4.99 and the larger was 5.99. That's a bit much for two bowls that are ruined.
I also saw this unfortunate bowl. A pink daisy cinderella 403 that had also seen better days.

Also, I don't know if anyone on here watches (or, watched since it was cancelled awhile ago) American Dreams but if you do there are lots of pyrex cameos. Like this one, a snowflake blue 404? anyone recognize the one with wheat (or are they trees?) on it?

Pyrex Love - from a crafty scientist

Hello fellow Pyrex lovers! My name is Kate and I'm from scientific culture! When I'm not spending my spare time making cute science crafts you can find me scavenging the thrift shops of British Columbia in search for pre-loved pyrex dishes to warmly welcome into my heart (and new home)! Although I have a plethora of hobbies and collections already, I find Pyrex hunting extra exciting! I am still fairly new to the world of Pyrex but I'd love to share you my collection so far - let's take a peek:


When I saw this little dish sitting in one of my favourite thrift shops in Kamloops, I knew it was destine to come home with me! I love the Autumn Harvest print and the bright pop of colour and $1 price tag was too much to pass up! Let the collection begin!


My good pal (and fellow Pyrex lover) Alanna spotted a pair of these dishes when we were shopping one day and I was thrilled to get it and double the size of my collection! Plus who can say no to charming butterflies and flower print? Yay!


Once again my collection doubled when my best friend Lindsay was kind enough to score me two more Autumn Harvest pieces for my 27th bday (what a great gal she is!).


Before I moved to Victoria at the end of August I decided to do one more thrift shop in Kamloops as a fond farewell. My mom was lovely enough to join me on this hunt and boy was I ever pleased to have spotted this darling pink mixing bowl! I am still swooning over the girly colour and even though I am far from finished unpacking my new place, I assure you this Pyrex dish is the perfect addition to our ultra masculine apartment. I'm not totally sure my boyfriend Fraser truly appreciates our new apple dish, but I figure since I brought the majority of the kitchen stuff with me when we moved in together (in fact, I believe he just brought a cheese grater and a bowl) the kitchen decor can be my domain.

I am so pleased to participate in the pyrex collective blog - and although I lead a busy life working, crafting, and blogging daily, I can't wait to start searching through the (new to me) second hand shops of Victoria to build my pyrex collection and come back here to share it with all of you!

Labor Day Finds!

Happy Labor Day Everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed a relaxing weekend. We were so happy here in Houston after almost a month of triple digit weather. Tropical Storm Lee brought us some relief in temperature.

My family spent the weekend hunting for Pyrex. I had a ton of luck! Between garage sales, Craigslist, Antique Malls and thrift stores, I found plenty to be excited about!

I went to lady's house who was selling the Autumn Harvest bowl set (in the second picture) and asked her if she was selling anymore Pyrex. She mentioned some kind of Federal glassware. Imagine my surprise when she took me into the kitchen and showed me all of the Butterprint pieces. She hadn't decided on keeping them or not, but eventually quoted a price. Most are duplicates so I will be adding them to my trade set soon. The solid turquoise pieces came from an Antique stores. The snowflake came from two different thrift stores.

Some from the lady on Craigslist, some from Antique stores and some from thrift stores. The Friendship piece still had the Goodwill price on it for 3.93 but the Antique dealer wasn't too thrilled about going down on the price. I ended up paying $6 which was still fair to me because I only have one piece of Friendship and never seem to find it. It was covered in black goop. I wish I had taken a before picture. It looks brand new now! Some duplicates will be posted in trades.

Second Friendship Piece!

Some pieces from an Antique mall including my FIRST Delphite bowl. I was so excited and to be honest, I might have missed it. My 9 year old son spotted it. Going Pyrex hunting with my family helps me spot things I might miss on my own. I found the unmarked opal bowls which I love. My MIL gave me the yellow fridgie that is such a a brilliant yellow. This was sold by a dealer in her store.

The Butterprint bowls were found in a thrift store by my hubby. He saw the print from across the store. I couldn't figure out what he was walking so fast toward. He almost bumped a woman out of the way to reach them. I laughed as soon as I saw what was in his hand. I have been looking for the 404 bowl for so long! I didn't even know they made Embroidery in yellow!

Time to Focus after an Incredible Week.

How do you decide on which patterns/colors to focus your collections on? I am suffering from Pyrexia Nervosa at the thought of swapping, selling or otherwise getting rid of any of my pieces. I have narrowed down my collection to Pyrex only with the exception of the gorgeous Fire-King Tulip Bowl. Don't get me wrong, I still have more Fire-King... I just don't display it.


THIS WAS A HUGE WEEK:

The Forest Fancies, Primary Yellow and one of the Spring Blossoms were all scored from a local online auction where I bid on the entire contents of a cabinet by photo alone. I paid $7.99 and also included were some great pots and pans, vintage rolling pin and other kitchen goodies.

The stacked Daisy set with two lids, one of the Flamingo Pink round casseroles, a Gold Butterfly small casserole, Green primary, several pieces of Fire-King and a Maid of Honor fridgie were all scored on Craigslist for $20. I will be gifting the Fire-King and adorable Maid of Honor Fridgie

A generous friend gifted me the Autumn Harvest set of three, a Yellow primary, Gold Butterfly casserole and two Early American pieces, a 4 qt. Town & Country cinderella AND a couple of Spring Blossom mixing bowls!

I now have over 50 pieces of Pyrex and need to focus and organize. Does anyone have any opinions on which pieces you think I should stay with or does anyone have a trade you would like for me to consider?

Loving the Weekend Thrifting!

Now that I am in summer, my weekends are virtually free. No soccer games, boy scout activities, no school activities for my son. So I am making full use of my free time. We have been hitting thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, and garage sales. I picked up some to trade (hopefully).

Here is what I picked up recently.

I love fridgies!

My Spring Blossom collection is growing. My first gold leaf (foil?) piece.



LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the turquoise.




I picked up the purple pieces for a purple loving friend who complained that Pyrex doesn't make anything in her favorite color.



Anyone know what pattern this is?

That's my haul for now. We are on the hunt for storage/display solutions for my collection. How do you store your pyrex? I want my pieces accessible to use but on display when not in use.

Spending a Birthday Searching for Pyrex

and not even my birthday.

All our thrift stores nearby have caught on and are pricing Pyrex way TOO HIGH! We don't have 50% off Goodwill days either. And the gas prices don't make it easy to randomly search for far away stores.

Over the weekend, my hubby graciously agreed to spend his birthday at an auction just for Pyrex. Yes, he's a keeper. I went home with almost everything. I spent a little too much on some pieces and got some great deals on others. I hate to let some Butterfly Gold pieces go to a higher bidder. I was sad to let it go but I know I will have another chance.

I got 3 sets of nested bowls and more. I even got my divided Barbed Wire dish! This one has been high on my list. I also won the Golden Grapes dip bowl to go with the chip bowl I got two weeks ago. I love when things come together. Don't worry, we celebrated my hubby's birthday the next day.

I've Caught Pyrex Fever!

 Yet another newbie signing in to report another case of Pyrex Fever. Above you see my collection, so far... and I've only been collecting for 1 month! If Pyrex Fever doesn't cool down a bit, I can't imagine how I'll manage all the Pyrex a year from now...

 I've found all the Pyrex I own so far at thrift stores, mostly Goodwill. I've been obsessed, checking the shops almost every other day!

 Some need some cleaning up, like the Snowflake dish above...

 but some pieces I find in great condition!

 I found the above green Spring Blossoms bowl I found at Goodwill, and I found the white Spring Blossom bowl about 30 minutes later at Savers!

My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I just can't resist the vintage charm any longer! More pictures at my blog, and you should check out some of the amazing Pyrex collections on Pinterest. (Or not, that's how I caught Pyrex Fever!)

And So It Begins

This is my very first post at the collective. I'm also new to collecting Pyrex. I had a vague understanding of vintage Pyrex from what I'd seen around the blogosphere and Flickr, but I never really "got" it until I saw some in person. That's when it all clicked for me, and I've been on the hunt for more ever since!

I was at a flea market for the first time, a place my mother in law suggested, when I spotted these two bowls and quickly snatched them up. Honestly, I probably over paid. The 403 Autumn Harvest bowl went for $12 and the 402 Butterprint set me back $10. But I knew nothing about Pyrex when I bought these. I just new they were pretty. The Autumn Harvest will make an excellent serving dish come Thanksgiving. The Butterprint was sold to me as "Amish Print," which seemed like an appropriate purchase as I was in Amish country, and I love anything aqua.

So why do I have Pyrex photographed with some not-Pyrex? Because I bought it, thinking it was Pyrex. Then took it home and photographed it, thinking it was Pyrex. Then I tried to identify the pattern and had trouble. For a brief moment, I thought I'd come across something rare. I started thinking I was secretly a thrift shopping genius. Then I, the genius, got the bright idea to turn the piece over. It's Glasbake. The Spring Blossoms casserole, that I did flip over before buying... and chipped the lid in the process! The dealer felt sorry for me (although I felt sorry for him, having some klutzy lady breaking his stuff) and gave me a discount. If I hadn't dropped it, I probably wouldn't have bought it, but then I wouldn't have a pretty casserole dish for my baked ziti. So it all worked out in the end.

You live, you learn! I've already learned so much more about Pyrex since I came home from the flea market and thought to myself: "I wouldn't mind having more of this!"

Yummy Pyrex finds today ... barbed wire promotional divided casserole dish ($4.99); round cinderella casserole 474 in Autumn Harvest (Wheat Stalks) with lid ($3.99) and an Old Orchard round cinderella casserole 473 ($1.49) at GW.

A little while ago, I also picked up this great Pink Daisy Oval Open Baker (not thrifted, actually paid eBay prices for this one!)

I'm going to agree with other posters who seem to think that people are cleaning out their houses this spring... so happy to see Pyrex on the thrift store shelves again!
