Pumpkins and Pyrex In Action

I have been finding more and more uses for my Pyrex addiction. So much, that I think my husband even realizes that it isn't a total waste. It also gives him something else to complain about, since they can't go into the dish washer. I can't win! :)

So today we carved our pumpkins with the toddlers (my daughter will be 3 in Jan, my son is a year and a half old). They thought they were very SPOOKY.

Afterwards we roasted the seeds and made some pumpkin bread from fresh pumpkins.

This is a perfect excuse to bring out my primary blue refrigerator dishes for mini-pumpkin loaves.



On a side note, I found a lovely dish at a local antique mall with the cradle and lid.
On searching for it, I find that it should have a white patterned lid. I will search for that too. In the meantime, take a gander at the Blue Floral Promotional Casserole.


Thus continues my affection for all blue pyrex.

I know it's not Pyrex, but what is it?

The other day, I stopped at an estate sale and picked up this pretty milk glass bowl...

but it's not Pyrex.

It sure looks like Pyrex, although the white is slightly more blue than some of the opal pieces I have.

But you can tell it's the same size and shape as a 403. So does anyone know what it is?

Lonely Little Lids

There always seems to be a surplus of lonely lids at Goodwill. The last few visits have been a bust when it comes to finding any dishes, but there are clear lids galore.

Last week, I jumped with excitement when I saw a clear, round Daisy lid sitting on the shelf! But my excitement was short lived when I turned it over and saw that the top side was incredibly faded - so much so that I put it back down. I try to keep my collection (obsession?) in check by only buying minty pieces. But this little lid was calling to me so I went back and grabbed it; it was only 99 cents after all!

Because it's so faded on the "presentation side", I won't actually use it for serving food. But I did find a way to display it! Jump on over to my blog to see how I incorporated it into my new kitchen display.

Pink Pyrex... with the odd lid....

This used to be my standard "make a dip" and take it to a party Pyrex. It has this wonderful aluminum lid. And it is a Pyrex issued lid. Though my camera can not capture the imprint on the dang lid.

Somehow this lovely covered dish ended up in the dishwasher of the Hostess.

I had used my dish to transport zesty dip in... for a friend's baby shower. Since the baby was to be a girl... and I wanted to use my pretty pink Pyrex. To add a little jazz to the table of food. Somehow my beautiful bowl ended up in the dishwasher after the Shower. And its pretty shiny pink color, came out dull.

Needless to say. I never used another piece of my pink Pyrex for any party... unless it is in my house.  :)  Where I can see what is in the dishwasher, before it's turned on.

My Latest Pyrex Finds

I spent this past Sunday as I spend all of my Sundays, out thrifting! I went to a rather large flea market and though they didn't have as much pyrex as I had hoped for, I still came away with quite a few great pieces.

I bought a 444 Early American mixing bowl along with a10 0z. covered utility casserole 018 for a total cost of $8

 a 441 Butterfly Gold mixing bowl for $1

and two clear patterned mixing bowls for a total of $5. I have no idea what the pattern is though. If you know please tell me! :)

All in all it was a great day and $14 well spent!

Flameware Collection

I have slowly but surely been expanding my Pyrex Flameware collection. It started a few months ago with a 1 1/2 qt saucepan:

I found a second one with it's lid for $2:

And finally, I found a 4 cup coffee pot at a Rummage sale for $2. I think the design of these is so beautiful.

The coffee brewed in the Pyrex is much stronger and tastes great, but it takes way longer than my French Press, so I save it for Sunday mornings when I'm not in a rush.

It may not be as bright and retro as my Primary or my Spring Blossom collections, but my Flameware is fast becoming one of my favorite kitchen tools.

Staying in the know...

Hi everyone!  My name is Katie and I'm a new contributor to the Pyrex Collective.  I've only been collecting for the past 6 months or so, but it has started to become a problem!  Seriously...  I travel for my job and have been finding myself mapping out all the thrift stores in my region and just "making" time to stop and take a spin through.  I usually pull into a parking lot and tell myself, "Ok, you have 5 minutes and $5"!

Today, I'm here to ask all of you addicts collectors how you organize your goods on paper.  I started keeping a notebook of all the details (i.e. date, piece, size, color, #, pattern, where I got it, and how much  I paid).  Ok, I know I'm a little OCD here, but I like having all that written down so I can quickly look and see what I have.  I was making each page a different color family and then printing photos of the pieces (Tuesday and Wednesday prints are $0.06 at Ritz Camera).  That was great when I started out with 15-20 pieces, but I'm getting a little carried away now and this system doesn't work well for a larger collection. 

Is anyone out there as ridiculous as I am and likes to have photos along with all the info handy?  I know some of you will say I should do it digitally but I like having something I can carry with me all the time.  So how do you do it?

Pink Pyrex...

It was probably around 1998 that I started to see the pink Pyrex show up in the antique stores and the flea markets. I had been buying the misc yellow/lime greenish color pieces. They were everywhere I looked. They did not match my vintage pink kitchen. But they were such a funky shade of yellow,  that I could not resist them.

Then one morning at the Whitewright Flea market... I saw my new love. Pink Pyrex.

Here was a gorgeous pink striped bowl... with its label intact! And there were two of them! I purchased both for 7.00.   I have not ever gotten, another piece of pink Pyrex that cheap ever again. 

The matching bowl was given as a gift to my sister. She too has love for the vintage kitchen glassware. Especially when they still have their label attached.

Dollar Pyrex

I found this Pyrex for a dollar at a garage sale today! The lady was just trying to get rid of her stuff and I was lucky enough to be there when she was doing it.

The Joyful Thrifter

So for many of us, Pyrex collecting reminds us of our 

mother's & grandmother's collections

My mom received Old Orchard for her wedding

and it is what I grew up with, but being brown, I never paid much attention

to it as a kid

and it wasn't until I became the full blown collector of pyrex

that I realized my grandma doesn't have a single piece of pyrex

So I asked her what mixing bowls she used to have,

just assuming she must have gotten rid of them along the way

She told me she NEVER had pyrex

when she got married they didn't receive too many wedding presents

and in her words they would have never been able to afford them at the time

Ok, so this made me really sad

Thinking of my adorable little grandma in her eighties

who never got a pretty set of pyrex to bake with

Well, I had to change that.

So for Christmas this year, my grandma is going to be 

getting her first set of pyrex.

Something she should have gotten at 24, not 84

but a wedding present sixty years late is better than never!

Knowing my grandma loves everything blue 

I knew her set also needed to be this hue

Far Reaches of Pyrexia

Hi there, first-time poster here. I've long wanted to start my own pyrex collection after seeing all the amazing pieces on the blog. Imagine my surprise when I went back to Asia to help clean out my childhood home and found... PYREX!!! I HAD to snap some pictures though I apologize for the poor quality of the photos.

I don't remember using them as a kid but they must be at least 15-16 years old. Still looking pretty good eh?

The first I believe is Snowflake Blue #442

The second is a Butterfly Gold #483







Needless to say I had to bring them back to Canada with me. I'm happy to report that both survived the journey and are now happily sitting in the cupboard waiting to be used. These pieces are definitely seasoned travelers by now.

Where are some of the craziest places you've found pyrex? I'd love to hear some stories.

Far From Home

So I'm attending a conference at Mayo for a few days. Minnesota is a long way from Texas but more importantly, it's a lot closer to Canada. (yes, master of the obvious). I was hoping to find some delphite. After my debacle yesterday I was happy to finally visit Old River Valley Antique Mall. I have no rental car and had a bus route mix up. I had already talked to Chris, the owner of Old River Valley Antique Mall, via Facebook and told her I was planning to come on Monday. {She was kind enough to message me after my first post about her shop on Facebook}. When the bus didn't work out, I called her to tell her I couldn't come after all. Do you know how great this lady is? She offered to come pick me up the next day after my conference and bring me to the shop.
We had a chance encounter during one of my sessions so we checked each other to make sure we weren't going to kidnap the other. LOL. I'm crazy about Pyrex but not crazy crazy. So Chris picked me up at the hotel and took me to her fantastic shop. I met her wonderful family including her gracious husband. It was his birthday and they were kind enough to show me around.
They had so many great items but I had to limit my purchases to what I could take on the plane. See my album for more pictures. 

Chris and her family packed all my purchases to protect them for my flight. What a fantastic family and new friend I met! Chris took me back to the hotel and even offered to take me to more places tomorrow but I didn't have the time. I go back home tomorrow. I did go to another shop Chris pointed out along the way. I made one purchase there. Everything is packed up so nicely that I will take photos once I made it back home.

If you are ever in the Rochester area, please stop by and visit Chris and her family. The shop is beautifully staged and they are all very knowledgeable and personable.

Missing in Action

I've been lurking on the blog for the last few weeks, but haven't posted anything for a while and been on the MIA list so to speak.. Yes, I have been out on the hunt for pyrex, and purchased items that I really want and have passed up on other pyrex that just isn't in my collections. 

Lately it seems that there just isn't as much pyrex out there as there had been, and maybe it is because people are not "spring cleaning" so to speak now that fall has set in.   Today I did find an awesome piece to go with my Butterfly Gold collection though!  It was tucked back behind a bunch of cups, so if I hadn't been "looking" it never would have been seen.  This wonderful little creamer!  Only  $.99!!  Now to find the sugar dish. :)

Butterprint Cinderella Bowls

On the 9th, I finally went to the Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market. It was AMAZING and packed full of vintage goodies. (My only complaint is that the prices were much higher than what I've been used to paying at the San Diego swap meet I go to.) While I was there, I picked up my first set of cinderella bowls - in my favorite pattern! They are in beautiful condition. I haggled these bowls down to $25, which I thought was expensive. After seeing sets selling for $100+ at that flea market, though, I realized I bought the cheapest set in the whole place!

What A Fabulous Week of Pyrex Collecting!

This past week I drove my mom back to her home in SW Ontario from my cottage north of Toronto. We couldn't resist making a few thrift store stops along the way. Here's what we found:

The Spring Blossom salt and pepper shakers were bagged with a few non-Pyrex items and marked $1.99 at a Value Village. The Green Salad aka Green Dots Squares was $6.99 at another VV. Best yet, it was seniors day at VV so my mom got me 20% off! Whoo-hoo!

Mom had the flamingo and lime pie plates and Barbed Wire waiting for me at her house from her local thrift store searches. She's the best mom! Then, on the way back to Toronto, I found the perfect Horizon fridgies for just a buck each at a small church thrift store.

I would have thought it was a great week just with these. But then, this past Thursday night, we had our GTA swap meeting. It was great! I left with these to fill in the gaps in my sets:

Rainy fall afternoons...

are perfect for baking banana bread!

The loaf pan is actually Anchor Hocking (am I allowed to say that here?!). The three piece green mixing bowl set came from Goodwill, for a whopping $8.08. There are a few tiny dings, but overall they're in great shape.

Although I actually use my Pyrex every day, I have finally started to display some of my collection.

I was running out of space in the drawer!

A Pyrex Thanksgiving

This past weekend was Thanksgiving in Canada, as other posters have mentioned.

My boyfriend's mom bought me two great pieces, especially for fall. The two middle sizes of the orange Butterfly Gold cinderella mixing bowls! (No pictures, of the two, whoops).

But, I did use some Pyrex this weekend when I was cooking up some brocolli casserole. And one of those bowls makes an appearance.

The wee orange casserole was a $2 find at Goodwill a couple weeks ago. Some lady was carrying it around, and I was watching her like a hawk. I had convinced myself that she was also a collector for some reason. However, before I had a chance to make a fool of myself by striking up a conversation, she asked someone working there how much it was, and she balked and couldn't believe it was that much, so she put it down and left. AWESOME!

On Sunday, the boyfriend's mom and I went to an auction...and there I purchased my first piece of Butterprint for $3! There was a whack of other stuff in the box it came in, too.

It's lidless, but that's okay because there's always a surplus of lonely lids at Goodwill.

Weekend Finds!

 Last Saturday,  my Girlfriend  kidnapped me and whisked me away to the Bowie flea market and then to Denton.  The Pyrex Gods smiled on us and I picked up three (444- 442) of the "Sandalwood" patterned Cinderella bowls for $25.

At the same booth I picked up this 1958 "Rooster Black" promotional piece with its gold plate carrier for $16 and although I spent $41 when you think about it each piece was $10.25 and I consider that a deal!
After bowie we headed down to Denton to see what it had to offer, and ended up finding the matching 441 Sandalwood Cinderella bowl for $8 normally I would have waited and tried to find the bowl cheaper, but I mean it was right there in front of me...  So I purchased it an finished the set!

I also spotted a special piece at an antique store that I'm going to try and send money with Patricia next week to snag... and the location and piece is Top Secret until then!

My shady thrift store

There is a super shady thrift store that I like to frequent. They have good prices and you have to dig, but I usually can find at least one skirt or dress that's in good condition, fits, and is super cheap. But they hardly EVER have decent housewares. I always check (just to be sure) but so far I've come up empty handed on the Pyrex side of life. However, my mom must just have better Pyrex luck than me. She brought this baby home for $1.50. It's in great condition on the outside but a little bit the worse for wear on the inside... but for $1.50, who cares? :)

Hellooo, Everybody

Long time lurker, first time poster.
My name is Tiffany and I blog over at Flea Market Fancy. I'm a recovering housewares hoarder with a soft spot for Pyrex and I'm just ticked pink to be posting here at the Collective.

My current prized piece of Pyrex is my large Gooseberry Pink Cinderella bowl. I snagged it in near mint condition at a flea market for $15.00. My collections right now are of Butterprint and Spring Blossom Green with a few Flamingo Pink bowls. All are stored in my 1940's cherry china cabinet.

The above picture is from my recent flea market destash. I had a Butterfly Gold butter dish that went to its new forever home, a covered Horizon Blue dish, an Autumn Harvest mixing bowl and two lovely pieces of Woodland in the light and dark brown.

I'm so in love with it, it looks so different from any of my other pieces

and it is also my first piece with the carrying cradle stand

Promotional "Gourmet"?

I found a lidless casserole at Goodwill on Friday...I almost walked away without it because it's not on my "want" list, but then I remembered that it was 50% off day so back I went.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, the gold leaf is shiny and hard to photograph!

According to the Pyrex Love pattern reference, the pattern is called Gourmet. However, mine differs pretty significantly from the one pictured there.

Mine has no trace of blue delphite (bummer), and is yellow as opposed to being white. It's also filthy!

Another recent find worthy of noting was a lonely Terra lid (no picture, sorry!). I wonder where it's bottom is??
