First charcoal snowflake!

There it was, just waiting for me: a charcoal snowflake divided dish! It passed the "finger around the edge check for chips" test, and I gleefully plunked down the $3.00 required by Goodwill.

It wasn't until I was home and washing it in the kitchen sink, that I turned it over and saw:

OMG!! It doesn't say PYREX! A funny logo instead...
Of course I went right to the computer and found out that I had apparently purchased a piece of Crown Pyrex, i.e. made in England.
This piece is marked with just the crown, not the JAJ plus crown stamp, so if anyone knows about these marks, I would be interested to hear.

So now we have Pyrex of three nations: the Canadian-made lime cake dish was recently thrifted for $0.75; it was half-price week at that thrift store.

And finally, here is my January 2012 kitchen display of blues and whites (Snowflake Blue, Horizon Blue, and opal).

Happy 2012, and good hunting!

How to Alienate Pyrex Lovers

I didn't get a chance to do much thrifting this weekend. I did find some pieces at antique malls that were insanely overpriced and nothing that I couldn't live without.

I also crossed paths with a very pushy dealer who lectured me on everything Pyrex. But was wrong about almost all of it. She told me she was the Queen of Pyrex and knew everything there is to know. But that Pyrex and FireKing are the same company, Pyrex's delphite line is Bluebonnet - not Bluebelle, and Pyrex never made a Starburst piece. Correcting your potential buyers doesn't seem like the best way to close a deal, but ok. I was willing to look past all of that and keep searching, but she constantly corrected me when I was telling my son the patterns. I know I am a recent collector, but I know Friendship, when I see it. It's not Woodstock like she called it. In the end, we left rather quickly.

I also spotted this Rose colored Hostess Dish. I have never seen this color before but the price was too steep for me. $29.

I found my first clear fridgie and loaf pan and got some pieces off eBay. I got the pink lasagna pan, pink 503 and blue 502 off eBay. Not sure if the white bowl is part of a dinnerware line but I love it. The Terra piece and stripes bowl will likely go to my trade list.

Hope you all had some great finds!

Welcome to Texas

I had one of THOSE days today. The kind that I already wanted to start over by 9 am. Coming home to these lovely new dishes made it so much better!

I said goodbye to these:
045 Golden Hearts

043 Meadow

and hello to these:
Opal Divided Dish

441 Golden Grape

Awesome trade with my new friend Leslie who also sent me the coolest video of her collection!

Everything arrived safe and sound in both Texas and California. I love when things work out! What a great way to end the day.

I have added more items to my trade set on Flickr. Contact me if you are interested.

Labor Day Finds!

Happy Labor Day Everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed a relaxing weekend. We were so happy here in Houston after almost a month of triple digit weather. Tropical Storm Lee brought us some relief in temperature.

My family spent the weekend hunting for Pyrex. I had a ton of luck! Between garage sales, Craigslist, Antique Malls and thrift stores, I found plenty to be excited about!

I went to lady's house who was selling the Autumn Harvest bowl set (in the second picture) and asked her if she was selling anymore Pyrex. She mentioned some kind of Federal glassware. Imagine my surprise when she took me into the kitchen and showed me all of the Butterprint pieces. She hadn't decided on keeping them or not, but eventually quoted a price. Most are duplicates so I will be adding them to my trade set soon. The solid turquoise pieces came from an Antique stores. The snowflake came from two different thrift stores.

Labor Day Weekend 2011
LOVE Turquoise!
Some from the lady on Craigslist, some from Antique stores and some from thrift stores. The Friendship piece still had the Goodwill price on it for 3.93 but the Antique dealer wasn't too thrilled about going down on the price. I ended up paying $6 which was still fair to me because I only have one piece of Friendship and never seem to find it. It was covered in black goop. I wish I had taken a before picture. It looks brand new now! Some duplicates will be posted in trades.
Labor Day Weekend 2011
Second Friendship Piece!
Some pieces from an Antique mall including my FIRST Delphite bowl. I was so excited and to be honest, I might have missed it. My 9 year old son spotted it. Going Pyrex hunting with my family helps me spot things I might miss on my own. I found the unmarked opal bowls which I love. My MIL gave me the yellow fridgie that is such a a brilliant yellow. This was sold by a dealer in her store.

The Butterprint bowls were found in a thrift store by my hubby. He saw the print from across the store. I couldn't figure out what he was walking so fast toward. He almost bumped a woman out of the way to reach them. I laughed as soon as I saw what was in his hand. I have been looking for the 404 bowl for so long! I didn't even know they made Embroidery in yellow!

Hope you all had some great finds this weekend. I am always happy to scrub and clean new (to-me) Pyrex. Looking forward to your posts!

Loving the Weekend Thrifting!

Now that I am in summer, my weekends are virtually free. No soccer games, boy scout activities, no school activities for my son. So I am making full use of my free time. We have been hitting thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, and garage sales. I picked up some to trade (hopefully).

Here is what I picked up recently.
I love fridgies!

My Spring Blossom collection is growing. My first gold leaf (foil?) piece.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the turquoise.

I picked up the purple pieces for a purple loving friend who complained that Pyrex doesn't make anything in her favorite color.

Anyone know what pattern this is?

That's my haul for now. We are on the hunt for storage/display solutions for my collection. How do you store your pyrex? I want my pieces accessible to use but on display when not in use.

It's been a while!!

Hello all,

It's been a while since I could post anything on the Pyrex Collective *sad face* but, I finally found some pyrex the other day! I had been wanting a pyrex loaf pan for a while and when I found this opal white dish I didn't even think twice.

I now have two opal white pieces (here's the other one) and I love them! So classic and so elegant and goes with any decor! Don't you think?

You can read about my other thrifty finds on my blog if you're interested!

Have a great Thursday!

Finally found some Pyrex!

Took a 100-mile road trip today to visit hubby's former colleagues and we hit up a bunch of thrift stores along the way there and back ... my only take-home finds were from two different Goodwills. The 503 Pink Gooseberry Refrigerator Dish and Pink Desert Dawn 2 quart baking dish were each $2.99. I have a spare lid for the Gooseberry at home that I'd picked up for 50 cents a while ago... so I'm planning on keeping this one in all it's minty goodness!

And at the second Goodwill, this promotional 1963 Golden Honeysuckle Casserole came home with me, with it's original lid, in excellent shape, for another $2.99. And along with it came a very minty 024 Round Casserole with lid in Opal White for the same price!

I will say that I didn't see much other Pyrex out there today, with the exception of one thrift store, which was charging worse-than-antique-mall prices for their very banged up and dishwasher-scared pieces. Want a run down of the atrocities?
3 pieces of a 4 bowl Primary set, with very little paint left: $41
A black snowflake 045 casserole, no lid and scratched to death: $12.50
A Spring Blossom 473 bowl, missing paint on it's handles as well as scratched throughout: $12
A 444 Early American Bowl is decent shape: $18
A 442 Early American Bowl in rougher shape: $12
A 475 Round Cinderella Casserole in Autumn Harvest, $16 with no lid.
and the only piece I would have considered buying?
A Pink Daisy Divided Dish with lid, $22.50 (no way for that price!)

So, what atrocious prices have you seen while thrifting?

Hello Everyone

My name is Will and I am new to the collective.

My obsession with pyrex began when I was younger. My mom had one Spring Blossom mixing bowl when I was growing up that was my favorite bowl to use for everything from making salads to popcorn.

Now that I am older I noticed that there were other pieces to this set and I wanted to use those instead of new dishes. This sent me down a long winding road leading me to here.

I found more Spring Blossom then I ever imagined and now I am realizing there is a whole world of other pyrex out there waiting for me to find. The pieces they produced are so varied it makes me feel like every time I go out there is an opportunity for me to find something new.

At first my wonderful girlfriend thought I might have lost my mind but now it is something we love doing together!

Spring Blossom Green

Here is my collection of spring blossom green. Also known to my family as "where it all began". As you can see it has grown well beyond that first mixing bowl. In fact I am only missing a few pieces of the bakeware. Without a doubt my favorite piece of this set is still the large mixing bowl. But other then that I would have to say its the refrigerator dishes or the salt and pepper shakers.

Random Pyrex

These are some of the random pieces I have collected since then. My collection isn't quite as colorful as some of yours. (I am dying to find some reasonably priced pink, yellow and blue). From Top Left clockwise we have: 1. Coffee mugs two are labeled pyrex one is labeled corning 2. A telephone pole insulator made by pyrex and a Terra Casserole 3. Another shot of them 4. "Midnight Bloom" with stand 5. Random collection of pieces The clear one is Colonial Mist 6. Another random collection Snowflake, Barbed wire, Old Orchard, Golden Bouquet? and Golden Pine.

Hopefully this post was not too long. I look forward to sharing more finds with you as well as seeing the great pieces you all find.

With any luck we will start a blog covering some of the other great items we have found while thrifting include the table these were sitting on for the picture.

more opal white.

I've been having good luck finding opal white at great prices.
This weekend I visited a huge antique center.

I got the piece below, an opal white 1.5 quart #023 round bottom casserole.
It's a really useful size.
I believe this originally came with a lid.
It was $3

I also found this.
for $3.
It's 7x7 square baking dish.
Based on the really quick research I did online, I believe it was part of a set including a silver cradle and a lid.
I'm thinking manufactured sometime between 1939-1947, based on the plain tab handles.
I need to scrub it a bit more to get the years of baked-on grease out of the crevices.
I think it will make awesome chewey brownies!

Did you find anything good this weekend?

Saturday's pyrex finds.

Hello.
I'm Tam.
I blog at To Live. To Love. To Laugh.

I've always had a love for Pyrex.
My love and collection started to grow when my Gram passed away in July 2010 and I inherited some of her Pyrex.
Those are the most precious pieces to me.
Everytime I'm out thrifting, garage saling, or antique shopping, I have an eye out for Pyrex.

Saturday I found myself with a few free hours in the morning, so I hit up a few thrift stores with my boys.
I found two Pyrex pieces.
YAY!

An Opal White 221 Dessert/Cake Pan in great condition.

And a 502 Opal White fridgie.
Although he's missing his lid, I couldn't pass him up.

To see what else I found thrifting on Saturday, check out my latest post here.

I look forward to meeting you!
