Fridgie Dilemma

I have a quick question that maybe you can help me solve... but first a story.
One of my first pieces was a horizon blue 501 fridgie, a few weeks later my mother found me a 502 that was blue. Then I went out to pick up a few pieces from a woman including 2 red 501s. Just last week I was at my cottage and found a yellow 503 at an antique shop for 11.00. In a few months I had collected the entire primary fridgie set, and all with lids. Now, in the last few weeks I have collected the exact same set just without the lids... or so I thought...

So, now my question to all of you is what is the difference between the horizon blue 502 fridige and the primary blue 502 fridgie? This may seem to sound like a silly question and I feel a bit a silly asking it but, I've looked all over and can't seem to spot a difference.
Can you help me?
My complete(?) primary set.

My Horizon Blue Fridiges

My lidless primary fridiges.

Now, my next question is: I bought this yesterday off a fellow collector. I knew it had utensil marks on it but I was unaware as to how bad they were. I've tried Weimans and BFK. They've worked but only marginally. what would you suggest?

Thank you!!!
Happy Hunting!

First Snowflake!

Merry Christmas, Pyrex people!

I caught the Pyrex bug only about three months ago, and have not yet lucked into any Christmas Pyrex, so my December kitchen display had to be "Primary":

At least we have some red and green in there.

I didn't even have a Snowflake piece until last week, when I found this beauty...

...which the nice people at Goodwill had priced at $3.00, probably because it looked so ugly with its companion lid:

I'm guessing they were embarrassed! So I got a perfectly good Verde lid, and a turquoise Snowflake, for the three bucks!

Wishing peace to all, happy holidays, and many festive tables adorned with Pyrex.

Thrift Store vs. Antique Store

I have a thrifting win to share with you today!
This is Denver's largest antique mall. It's over 50,000 square feet and has almost 300 dealers. I can always find some good Pyrex here, but the prices aren't cheap!

I stopped there today to hunt for Christmas gifts for my antique-loving friends, and while I was there I saw this {I always see a few sets of these when I'm there}:
A complete primary fridgie set for $75.00.
This is a very typical price for antique stores, I've found.

But today was a WIN for me, because before I stopped in the antique mall, I ran down the street to Savers. I have a problem with passing a thrift store, I HAVE to stop in to see what I might find.

I'm sure some of you can relate...

Anyway, I immediately checked the "Pyrex shelf" as I always do first thing when I enter a thrift store. Sadly, there was no Pyrex in kitchen ware today.

BUT, when I turned the corner and went down the knick-knacks aisle,
I FOUND THIS!
Sure, it was one red 501 short of a full set, but I didn't care! I snatched them up and  ran for the registers to make them officially mine.

They even have the old style lids:

So this is an old set--which made it even more exciting when I got them home, washed them, and inspected them to find...
They are mint! Not a untensil scratch, not a chip to be found. Even the corners show no wear whatsoever:

And now, at the risk of making you all completely green with envy,
check out these prices!!!

That's right.
$0.99 for the 501.
$1.99 for the 502
$2.99 for the 503.

GET OUT!

I could kiss the person who priced these.

So that's my major win.
The antique mall down the street wanted $75.00 {including the 2nd red 501} but I paid a whopping $6 for my happy little set.

And we all lived happily ever after...
The End.

Thanksgiving

I hope those of you in the U.S. had a great Thanksgiving on Thursday. (If you're not from the U.S., then I hope you had a great Thursday in general.) I was happy I got the chance to use some of my Pyrex this year!

So the pie was store-bought, but the whipped cream was homemade and served in a Blue Dots bowl... so that makes it okay, right? :)

How the addiction began...

Hello, Pyrex people!

This is my first-ever blog post.

Two months ago, I was not a Pyrex addict. I had always been fond of my one set of Pyrex bowls, which I had purchased in the late 1970s. Sadly, a few years ago, I broke the large green bowl (it was the avocado green/yellow/orange/blue set).

When my husband complained how he missed the green bowl, it occurred to me that I might find a replacement in a thrift shop, so I started checking out the local ones.

Then one day last September, I found....

... which you will all recognize. I almost didn't buy them from the Salvation Army for the $13.00 they wanted, as it wasn't "THE big green bowl"... but then I did.

I figured that they were older than my 1970s set, and out of curiosity I started researching them on the internet.
So I learned that not only were these the iconic early primary Pyrex bowls, but that they were probably some of the earliest, as they were thicker, and they lack the 401-404 numbering (although you may not be able to tell from this pic.... sorry).

Was it beginner's luck? Fate?
I then kept reading websites: Pyrex Love, Corelle Corner, the Pyrex Collective Blogs, and looking at the lovely pictures.... and to quote Shakespeare:

"Even so quickly may one catch the plague?" [Twelfth Night]

And now I am haunting the local thrifts, and filling the closet in my spare bedroom with PYREX!

Here are a couple of my best finds so far. I was glad to learn from The Vintage's post "My yellow summer loves" that this Gourmet does date back to 1961, as it's not listed in Barbara Mauzy's book, nor on Pyrex Love. I wondered if Pyrex had recycled the pattern in this yellow/gold leaf combo at a later date. It's nice to think of it finding a new home (mine) 50 years after being first received as a Christmas gift.
I found it at Goodwill, uglified with a scratched-up Daisy lid.

This cute little 080 personal casserole was MADE IN CANADA (which is where I am). Most
pics of these are in lime or flamingo, so it is nice to see it in turquoise. It is posing with the Barbed Wire dish so that you can see its size.

Sorry to be so long-winded; thanks for reading!

new finds & happy holidays!

I found this first little Dandelion Duet Promotional while thrifting.  Typically this particular store always charges SO much for Pyrex, but not this little guy.  It had some orangish spots, that happened to come off without any effort, but I guess they didn't think they would.
I picked it up - with the wrong lid - for $2.
The next little guy I found at an antique mall but just couldn't pass it up for $5, because, seriously, it is SO small & SO cute!  The salt shaker isn't new, just there for sizing purposes!  I did however thrift it a while back for .49 cents, and yes, I do have the pepper shaker too!

My obsession started with Spring Blossom when I was about 18.  I've always loved green, so green Pyrex is no exception!  I picked up these verde fridges IN THE BOX!  I am so in love.  In fact, I re-arranged the WHOLE pyrex display to get all my green lovin' together on one shelf.  I'll have to take some "group" shots soon!
Now this last casserole is not new, but I couldn't pass up the chance to take a shot of it by the Christmas tree, yes, I do decorate on the retail schedule.  So pretty and ready to be used this holiday season.
So there you go - new little treasures for me!
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Victory! The Green Dot is Finally Mine!

I am really late in sharing this news but it doesn't at all reflect on how happy I am to have this complete set.

My wonderful hubby bought the green dot bowl off ebay for me. He probably paid much more than I would have but he said it was worth it.

My happy collection!

My primary sets are together now
I still have plenty of items on my wishlist but every time I am in my kitchen, looking at these sets make me so happy.

The Best Kind of Friends

While I get teased for my Pyrexia and even some strange looks, I have some of the best friends I could ask for. A wonderful friend of mine gave me, yes GAVE me a set of Primary Fridgies.

I was over the moon! I don't have this set and have stared at many sets at antique malls mocking me with their high priced tags.

Primary Fridge Set

I am so grateful for my friends who GIVE me their Pyrex and my PCII buddies who help me celebrate such occasions! If you are in the Houston area, please contact me a lisa(dot)palacios@hotmail(dot)com. A fellow PCII and I are trying to organize a Houston swap.

Weekend Hauls!

Spring Cleaning is certainly working in my favor! I am finding more pyrex than I can keep up with!
Have such a special place in my heart for this pattern.

This piece is a wee little dish.

Love all of it!

I can't seem to have enough carafes or New Dots for that matter!

Primary Fridgies!
Hope you found some good things over the weekend!

Loving the Weekend Thrifting!

Now that I am in summer, my weekends are virtually free. No soccer games, boy scout activities, no school activities for my son. So I am making full use of my free time. We have been hitting thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, and garage sales. I picked up some to trade (hopefully).

Here is what I picked up recently.
I love fridgies!

My Spring Blossom collection is growing. My first gold leaf (foil?) piece.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the turquoise.

I picked up the purple pieces for a purple loving friend who complained that Pyrex doesn't make anything in her favorite color.

Anyone know what pattern this is?

That's my haul for now. We are on the hunt for storage/display solutions for my collection. How do you store your pyrex? I want my pieces accessible to use but on display when not in use.

My rapidly growing collection

I am starting to run out of room... I will have to start the art of "stacking" here soon.... my husband admitted to me last night that he is "worried".... not because of the money I am spending (not spending much!) but because of how much I have found so quickly... I wonder what my kitchen will look like three months from now?! ;-)

Two-day Pyrex Haul

It's been quite the Pyrex haul the last couple of days around these parts. Of course, despite hitting up multiple garage sales (there's been city-wide ones the past couple of weekends) I've had the best luck at the thrift stores. These Daisy cinderella casseroles (471 and 473) were found at a thrift with the one opaque lid for $3.

I couldn't pass up this vintage Anchor Hocking juice carafe that appears to match the Daisy perfectly ... all it's stripes are in perfect condition and it has the original plastic lid! Only $1 at the same thrift.

And also there was this rather sad looking little Woodland Fridgie 501 with lid for 75 cents. It had some strange white stuff covering it... that soap and water wouldn't remove. This is the before... the after is super shiny - Magic Eraser did the trick!

These two white beauties are my garage sale finds ... an Pyrex-stamped Hamilton Beach mixing bowl (super heavy and large!) for a quarter, and an Anchor Hocking loaf pan with a pretty (but unknown) blue floral pattern for $1.

Then yesterday, I found these primary yellow pieces! The top is the largest bowl in the primary set (404) and looks like it has never been used! It was $2.50 at a different thrift store. And below it is my other yellow find ... a 503 refrigerator dish that has seen PLENTY of use! With the lid, it was only $3, so it was hard to pass up. I did scrub it up good after this picture and it's pretty much without shine, but much cleaner!

I had passed up this same 043 oval casserole in Golden Acorn earlier in the day at a different thrift store as it wasn't in great condition and was $3. Apparently the Pyrex karma gods thought I should have this piece because it was at the next store, in great condition and marked only $2. So, I snatched it up!

And finally, I found this wonderful, pristine condition 8-inch lime green round cake pan for $2. The color looks a little funky in this shot, but I assure you, it's solid throughout without any sign of wear! There is nothing I love more than shiny Pyrex!

So, what have you been finding lately? Anyone having ANY luck at garage sales? It seems I've been striking out no matter how many I hit (and I've been at roughly 40 over the last two weekends).
